On an extraordinary evening at St Mary’s, Manchester City was eliminated from the League Cup by Premier League strugglers Southampton after a shock 2-0 defeat in the quarter-final.
Southampton’s Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo scored first-half goals, despite Manchester City having substitutes Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne come off the bench in the second period.
Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse said “It’s always tough when you’re in the position we are… We showed no fear.” Pep Guardiola had left Haaland and De Bruyne on the bench ahead of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Southampton will now face Newcastle in their first League Cup semi-final since 2017.
