Leverkusen Clinch German Supercup Glory in Tense Penalty Shootout
Bayer Leverkusen emerged victorious in the German Supercup, defeating VfB Stuttgart 4-3 on penalties.
The match, held at a packed stadium, was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Leverkusen playing with ten men for more than half the game.
Early Drama and Resilience
Leverkusen took an early lead in the 11th minute when Edmond Tapsoba’s header was nudged over the line by Victor Boniface.
However, Stuttgart quickly responded, with Enzo Millot equalizing just four minutes later.
The game took a dramatic turn in the 37th minute when Leverkusen’s Martin Terrier received a straight red card for a studs-up challenge, leaving his team to battle with ten men.
Stuttgart’s Fightback
Stuttgart capitalized on their numerical advantage, hitting the woodwork three times and eventually taking the lead in the 63rd minute through Deniz Undav.
The match seemed to be slipping away from Leverkusen, but their never-say-die attitude, which earned them the nickname ‘Neverlusen’ last season, came to the fore once again.
Late Equalizer and Penalty Shootout
With just two minutes remaining, Patrik Schick latched onto an Alejandro Grimaldo through ball to level the score, sending the match into a penalty shootout.
Leverkusen’s composure from the spot was impeccable, with all four of their penalty takers converting. In contrast, Stuttgart’s Silas missed the decisive spot kick, handing Leverkusen the victory.
