Tottenham roar back to crush Burnley thanks to Son’s hat-trick and Maddison magic
Son Heung-min, the star of Tottenham Hotspur, showcased his brilliance with a remarkable hat-trick, marking his first goals of the season.
This performance came as Tottenham dominated Burnley, securing a 5-2 victory at Turf Moor on Saturday, even after initially falling behind.
Burnley, still searching for their first point of the season, enjoyed a dream start as Lyle Foster of South Africa found the net with a clinical finish in the fourth minute.
However, Tottenham quickly found their rhythm, with Son leveling the score in the 16th minute through an exquisite chip. Just before half-time, defender Cristian Romero unleashed a powerful shot that put the Londoners in the lead.
In the 54th minute, James Maddison added to Tottenham’s tally with a beautifully curled finish, making it 3-1. Son then struck twice in rapid succession just past the one-hour mark, completing a resounding victory that propelled Tottenham to second place in the table with 10 points from four games.
Burnley managed to salvage a late consolation goal through Josh Brownhill.
Tottenham had experienced a setback in the League Cup with a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham earlier in the week, dampening the initial optimism surrounding the Ange Postecoglou era. However, their performance at Burnley reignited that optimism, as Postecoglou’s team displayed a free-flowing style of play, with Son leading the charge.
Despite losing his longtime strike partner Harry Kane on the eve of the season, the new club captain demonstrated his ability to adapt with a superb performance.
Burnley did start the match well, with a fluent left-sided move resulting in Luca Koleosho displaying great pace and setting up Foster for a well-placed shot past Guglielmo Vicario.
Nevertheless, Tottenham remained composed, and a long pass forward found Son, who combined brilliantly with Manor Solomon before delicately chipping the ball over goalkeeper James Trafford.
Tottenham took the lead just before half-time, with shots from Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr being blocked, only for the ball to fall to Romero, who blasted it into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Burnley’s expansive style of play backfired in the second half, as they were repeatedly caught out. After losing possession, Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie provided an assist to Maddison, who curled in a sublime goal from 25 meters.
New signing Solomon, preferred over the struggling Brazilian striker Richarlison, contributed his second assist of the game by setting up Son in the 63rd minute. Three minutes later, Son completed his hat-trick after being played in by Pedro Porro.
