Spain thrash Cyprus 6-0 in Euro qualifier

Spain and Belgium secured commanding victories in their respective UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying group matches on Tuesday.

In a Group A clash held in Granada, the Spanish national team dominated the Greek Cypriot Administration with a resounding 6-0 victory. Gavi, the Spanish midfielder, opened the scoring in the 18th minute, followed by Mikel Merino extending the lead before halftime.

Spain continued their onslaught after the 70th minute, with Joselu, Ferran Torres (2), and Alex Baena all finding the net in a span of 13 minutes. With this win, Spain, holding nine points and a game in hand, solidified their second-place standing in Group A, which is currently led by Scotland with 15 points from five matches.

Spain’s next challenge will be against Scotland on October 12 in Seville, as they aim to close the gap in the standings.

In a Group F contest at Brussels’ King Baudouin Stadium, Belgium delivered a resounding 5-0 victory over Estonia, with Romelu Lukaku of Roma scoring two goals. Jan Vertonghen, Leandro Trossard, and Charles De Ketelaere also found the net for Belgium. Vertonghen, a key figure for Belgium and Anderlecht, marked his 150th international appearance with a goal.

Belgium currently leads Group F with 13 points and is locked in a battle with Austria, who also have 13 points. Austria secured a 3-1 win against Sweden, adding pressure to Belgium ahead of their crucial showdown on October 13 in Vienna. This clash between Austria and Belgium could determine the group’s top spot.
