Roberto Martinez appointed as new Portugal head coach
The Portuguese national team has announced the hiring of Roberto Martinez as their new head coach, ending any potential link with Jose Mourinho.
Martinez, who previously managed Belgium and has experience with club teams such as Swansea, Wigan, and Everton, led Belgium to the top of the FIFA world rankings, but did not achieve any major victories.
The former head coach, Fernando Santos, who led Portugal to victory in Euro 2016, stepped down after the World Cup.
Jose Mourinho, who is currently the manager of Roma, was rumored to be a candidate for the position, but no job sharing arrangement was proposed.
One major issue Martinez will face early in his tenure is the decision about the international future of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored the most goals in men’s international football but was benched during the World Cup.
