Riyad Mahrez nets winner as Manchester City overcome Chelsea
Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, narrowing the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Arsenal to just five points.
The match was fairly uneventful until the 60th minute, when Pep Guardiola made a double substitution, bringing on Riayd Mahrez and Jack Grealish.
Just three minutes later, the two combined to score the game’s only goal, with Mahrez tapping in a perfectly weighted cross from Grealish.
Prior to the substitution, City had a somewhat sluggish and passive performance, possibly due to Guardiola’s confusing lineup which saw several players in unfamiliar positions.
However, after the substitution and the removal of fullbacks Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker at halftime, City began to dominate and create chances.
Chelsea, meanwhile, struggled and remained in 10th place, 19 points behind the leaders. The teams will face off again on Sunday in the FA Cup, with Manchester City hosting.
