Real Madrid crowned the Copa Del Rey after defeating Osasuna 2-1
Real Madrid won their first Copa del Rey since 2014 after successfully fending off the persistent attacks from Osasuna.
Despite the opposition’s impressive display against the reigning European champions, Los Blancos managed to secure the victory with the help of Rodrygo’s two goals.
The first goal was scored in the early minutes of the game when Vinicius Junior dribbled past Jon Moncayola and Ruben Pena and passed the ball back to Rodrygo, who scored from close range.
Real Madrid’s counterattacks also proved effective, with Vinicius constantly running at Moncayola and crossing the ball for Rodrygo and Karim Benzema to attempt shots on goal.
However, Osasuna created their fair share of chances and almost equalized when Ez Abde robbed Eder Militao of the ball and had a one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois but Dani Carvajal cleared the ball off the line.
Despite missing out on their first ever major trophy, Osasuna can be proud of their performance.
At the half-hour mark, David Alaba struck a stunning 30-yard free-kick that hit the crossbar, adding to the chaos of the game.
Vinicius attempted to score next, cutting in from the left and curling a shot from 15 yards that narrowly missed the target.
Osasuna managed to equalize within 12 minutes of the second half, with Lucas Torro striking the ball from 20 yards after Abde’s cross deflected into his path and flew through a group of players into the bottom corner of Thibaut Courtois’ net.
Real Madrid had a chance to regain the lead from the resulting kick-off but Fede Valverde skied his volley after Karim Benzema’s cross found him in acres of space.
However, Los Blancos managed to score again with 20 minutes remaining in the game.
Vinicius ran to the touchline and sent a ball across the face of goal that Osasuna failed to deal with, and Toni Kroos’ deflected shot fell kindly for Rodrygo to score his second of the evening.
Real Madrid had opportunities to extend their lead further, with Antonio Rudiger heading over from a Rodrygo cross and Vinicius’s cutback intercepted by Sergio Herrera in the final five minutes of the game.
