Newcastle reach EFL Cup final
Newcastle United secured a 2-1 win over Southampton in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, thanks to a brace from Sean Longstaff.
This victory set them on a path towards ending their drought for silverware, securing a Wembley date in the process.
With a 1-0 lead from the away win at St Mary’s, Newcastle proved too strong for Southampton despite being reduced to 10 men in the final 10 minutes when Bruno Guimaraes was sent off.
Longstaff opened the scoring early on with a low shot into the bottom corner, assisted by Captain Kieran Trippier.
The midfielder added his second, fueled by a strong move down the left by Joe Willock, to make the score 2-0.
Southampton soon replied with a goal from Che Adams, breaking Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope’s 931-minute clean sheet streak.
