Antoine Griezmann’s stunning overhead kick and Alvaro Morata’s brace were the highlights of the game.
The Dutch champions took an early lead with a seventh-minute own goal by Mario Hermoso, who inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net after a Jan Oblak save. They extended their lead in the 34th minute through David Hancko.
However, Morata equalized for Atletico in the 12th minute, setting the stage for Griezmann’s spectacular goal just before halftime, making it 2-2. Morata then struck again, finding the left corner of the net two minutes into the second half.
This impressive comeback victory propelled Atletico Madrid to the top of Group E, with a one-point advantage over Feyenoord. Meanwhile, the Group’s other match, featuring Celtic and Lazio, was scheduled for later on Wednesday.
In another early match, Royal Antwerp, making their debut in the competition, squandered a two-goal lead and missed a last-minute penalty in a 3-2 defeat against Shakhtar Donetsk in Group H. Porto was set to host Barcelona in the group’s other fixture.
Arbnor Muja and Michel-Ange Balakwisha gave the Belgian champions a 2-0 lead within 33 minutes. However, Shakhtar mounted a comeback in the second half, with Danylo Sikan scoring a header in the 48th minute. Yaroslav Rakitskyy’s free-kick deflected off Balakwisha to equalize in the 71st minute, and Sikan secured the win with a goal five minutes later after a costly error by Antwerp’s goalkeeper, Jean Butez.
Antwerp had a chance to salvage a draw, but veteran Toby Alderweireld’s penalty in the final moments of the game missed wide to the left.
The remaining late matches included Newcastle vs. Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund vs. AC Milan in Group F, as well as RB Leipzig vs. defending champions Manchester City and Red Star vs. Young Boys in Group G.
