Man Utd book place in Carabao Cup semi-finals
Manchester United secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 victory over Charlton, though the win was not particularly convincing.
The game was played at Old Trafford, where Charlton was supported by 9,000 fans.
United’s team included debutant Kobbie Mainoo, but also featured the return of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.
Early on, United’s extra quality showed as Alejandro Garnacho caused problems for Charlton defender Sean Clare, setting up Diogo Dalot for an unsuccessful shot in the second minute, and having two shots of his own later in the half.
In the 21st minute, Antony scored a beautiful 25-yard goal that Charlton’s goalkeeper had no chance of stopping. United’s confidence continued to grow, and Charlton had some chances of their own.
However, after Dalot was forced to leave the game with an injury, Fred hit the post with a powerful free kick.
In the second half, United’s coach, Erik ten Hag, made three substitutions to try and improve the team’s performance.
Despite some strong plays from Charlton, United’s Facundo Pellistri and Marcus Rashford scored in the final minutes of the game to seal the victory and a spot in the semi-finals.
