Galatasaray has secured the title five times over the past decade, adding pressure on Fenerbahce to break their streak. This confirmation followed days of speculation and hints about his appointment. Mourinho was later photographed disembarking from an airplane, with Fenerbahce posting the simple yet impactful phrase, “THE Special One,” echoing his self-description upon joining Chelsea in 1998.

A Boost to Fenerbahce’s European Ambitions

At 61, Mourinho aims to elevate a club that has yet to win a European title. Fenerbahce is set to enter the Champions League early qualifying rounds in July. Mourinho’s impressive resume includes Champions League victories with Porto, Inter Milan, and Manchester United. Additionally, he won the Europa League (and its predecessor, the UEFA Cup) with Porto and Manchester United, and a Europa Conference League title with Roma two years ago.

Proven Track Record in Domestic Leagues

Mourinho has claimed eight titles across the Portuguese, English, Italian, and Spanish domestic leagues. His arrival in Istanbul brings hope that he can replicate this success at Fenerbahce. Late Saturday night, Mourinho posted a video promising to “see you tomorrow at Kadikoy, and let’s begin our journey together,” signaling his commitment to this new chapter.

Challenges and Expectations

This marks Mourinho’s first role since leaving Roma in January, after a tenure marked by the Europa Conference League title in 2022 and numerous disputes with referees. Notably, he hasn’t coached outside the top five European leagues since 2004 when he joined Chelsea after winning the Champions League with Porto.
