FC Barcelona win 2022/23 La Liga title
Barcelona won La Liga for the first time since 2019 by beating Espanyol 4-2, taking the title from their rivals Real Madrid.
The match ended on a sour note, with pitch invaders chasing celebrating Barcelona players from the field. Robert Lewandowski scored twice for Barcelona, while Alejandro Balde and Jules Kounde also found the net.
Espanyol’s Javi Puado and Joselu scored late goals for the hosts. Barcelona has struggled in recent years but this triumph signals significant improvement, with coach Xavi Hernandez winning his first major trophy since taking over in November 2021.
Despite initial criticism, President Joan Laporta’s rebuild of the team has been successful. The team won the Spanish Super Cup in January and sealed La Liga glory with four games to spare.
Xavi praised his team for their hard work and sacrifice, saying, “We sealed La Liga with a fantastic game, we were brilliant.” The win leaves Espanyol 19th in the league, four points from safety with four matches remaining.
