Denmark advance as Serbia exit Euro 2024 after goalless draw

Denmark secured second place in Group C and a place in the knockout phase of Euro 2024 with a goalless draw against Serbia.

Rasmus Hojlund missed the best chance for Denmark, while Serbia – who needed a win to have any chance of qualifying – came too late and were eliminated from the tournament with just one point.

Aleksandar Mitrovic missed a late chance and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic failed to beat Kasper Schmeichel with a shot in stoppage time, meaning the inevitable comeback in Munich came to nothing.

Denmark had the best chance of the first half. Christian Eriksen, who is the most-capped Danish player of all time with his 133rd international appearance, saved from Predrag Rajkovic with a long-range shot.

Denmark had the ball in the net after 23 minutes, but the referee ruled that Eriksen’s corner was out of play when it was taken.

Hojlund tested Rajkovic again and missed arguably Denmark’s best chance of the first half when he slipped as he attempted to shoot.

Half-time substitutes Dusan Tadic and Luka Jovic added pace to the Serbian attack and could have scored the opener in the 54th minute, but Tadic pushed the ball past Schmeichel and into the net.

Milinkovic-Savic missed the last Serbian chance in stoppage time when he missed the target with a header after a cross from Dusan Vlahovic.
