Athletic Bilbao asserted their dominance with a convincing 2-0 triumph over a lackluster Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday, narrowing the gap on the top four.
Ernesto Valverde’s side, positioned fifth, edged within two points of the reigning champions Barcelona, who occupy the fourth spot. Gorka Guruzeta and Nico Williams delivered second-half goals, securing a well-deserved victory for the spirited Basque team, which showcased its dominance at the exuberant San Mames.
In the initial half, Athletic pressed Diego Simeone’s side, consistently challenging Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Oblak displayed his skills with a remarkable low save at his near post to thwart Guruzeta early on, and another save to block Nico Williams’ attempt after a successful left-wing breakthrough.
Oblak’s goal frame came to his rescue twice, with both Inaki and Nico Williams hitting the woodwork. Athletic’s prime opportunity in the first half arrived from the penalty spot, but Oihan Sancet’s attempt soared high and wide after Caglar Soyuncu fouled Nico Williams.
Athletic’s breakthrough in the second half was swift, as Ander Herrera’s cross found Guruzeta unmarked at the back post, allowing him to finish with ease. Inaki Williams, celebrating his 400th appearance for Athletic, played a pivotal role in the build-up, sustaining his impressive form despite not finding the net.
Nico Williams extended Athletic’s lead with a spectacular second goal, creating space on the right side of the area and bending a shot over Oblak into the far top corner with his weaker left foot.
Although Atletico showed signs of life after Athletic’s second goal, with threats from Samuel Lino and Marcos Llorente, they were unable to stage a comeback.
Barcelona, led by Xavi Hernandez, could surpass Atletico in the standings if they avoid defeat against Valencia at the Mestalla. Girona, the league leaders, host Alaves on Monday, while second-placed Real Madrid welcomes Villarreal on Sunday.
