Arsenal keep Premier League title hopes alive with 2-0 win at Newcastle

At St James’ Park, Arsenal kept their slim chances of winning their first Premier League title in almost two decades alive by defeating Newcastle 2-0.

Despite the hosts twice hitting the woodwork, Martin Odegaard’s early goal gave Mikel Arteta’s team an impressive victory, although they were fortunate at times. Newcastle made a lively start, with Jacob Murphy hitting the woodwork after just 71 seconds.

However, the home crowd was left frustrated after a penalty awarded against Jakub Kiwior for handball was overturned by VAR.

Odegaard fired Arsenal ahead four minutes later and almost scored a second before the break, saved by Nick Pope after Gabriel Martinelli’s initial effort.

Newcastle struggled to create scoring opportunities, with Ramsdale denying Murphy before halftime, and Odegaard again saved by Pope in stoppage time.

After the break, Alexander Isak’s header hit the post, and Ramsdale saved Fabian Schar’s header, which would have leveled the score.

With less than 20 minutes left, Schar scored an own goal from Gabriel Martinelli’s cross, and Arsenal secured a 2-0 victory.
