Newcastle united makes a long-awaited return to top-tier continental competition after more than two decades, embarking on a journey to Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (San Siro italy) to face last year’s semifinalists, AC Milan, in the opening match of the group stage on Tuesday evening .

Thursday’s fixtures Uefa Champions League

The Magpies had a remarkable Premier League campaign in the previous season, securing a top-four finish well before the season’s end.

However, their start to the new season has been less than ideal, with three losses in the first four matches. The challenging fixture list, featuring opponents such as Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton, has undoubtedly posed a significant challenge for Eddie Howe’s squad.

In stark contrast, AC Milan has had a splendid start to their Serie A campaign, comfortably winning all three of their initial matches and scoring a total of eight goals.

Olivier Giroud has been in exceptional form, tallying four goals in just three league appearances, while Christian Pulisic has also found the back of the net in two out of three games.

Interestingly, this matchup marks the first official meeting between AC Milan and Newcastle.

Team News:

Over the weekend, AC Milan had a small silver lining as no additional players succumbed to injuries. However, Coach Pioli had to manage without center-back Pierre Kalulu due to a thigh issue, which may sideline him for several weeks. Additionally, Ismael Bennacer is on the long path to recovery following knee surgery.

During the recent derby match, Fikayo Tomori was suspended and could only watch from the sidelines as Inter Milan dominated AC Milan.

However, the English international is now eligible to return on Tuesday and might replace Malick Thiaw, who had a subpar performance during the weekend.

Christian Pulisic had a relatively quiet game in the derby, so Samuel Chukwueze may be considered by Pioli for a starting position alongside Leao and Olivier Giroud. Giroud managed to play for 77 minutes on Saturday, despite sustaining an injury while representing France on international duty.

AC Milan will also have a reunion with former player Sandro Tonali, who faced uncertainty when he suffered an injury during the international break.

However, Tonali was able to make the bench against Brentford and should be reintroduced into the starting lineup this week.

Unfortunately, Joe Willock (calf) and Emil Krafth (knee) won’t be available for their side’s Champions League opener. Additionally, Joelinton will be absent from Tuesday’s match due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Brazil.

Meanwhile, Matt Ritchie, Mark Gillespie, and Javier Manquillo have all been omitted from the Magpies’ Champions League squad.
