Xabi Alonso Stays Focused on Leverkusen Amidst Managerial Frenzy
Xabi Alonso, the current head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, has once again addressed the swirling speculation surrounding his future, reiterating his commitment to the club despite interest from giants like Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
Both European powerhouses are searching for new managers, with Jurgen Klopp set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season and Thomas Tuchel departing Bayern after the current campaign. Alonso, who has impressed with his unbeaten Leverkusen side currently atop the Bundesliga, has emerged as a top target for both clubs.
Despite the rumors, Alonso remains laser-focused on his present task. He recently stated, “I’m assuming that right now [I will be Leverkusen coach next season]. It’s not a problem for me. I know that my goal is to be successful with the team.” He emphasizes his dedication to the club’s success and highlights the importance of not getting distracted by speculation at this crucial stage of the season.
While acknowledging the Bayern interest, Alonso downplays its impact, saying, “It’s not a problem. It’s a super opponent that we have, but there is no distraction. For me this [speculation] is not a problem.”
However, German journalist Florian Plettenberg suggests that Alonso might favor Bayern over Liverpool if a move materialized. Alonso played for both clubs during his illustrious career, representing Liverpool from 2004 to 2009 and Bayern from 2014 to 2017.
With Leverkusen still in contention for the Bundesliga title, German Cup, and Europa League, Alonso’s focus remains firmly on the current season. Only time will tell if he continues his impressive journey with Leverkusen or succumbs to the lure of a European giant.
