Xavi agrees new three-year Barcelona contract
Reportedly, Xavi has agreed to extend his contract with Barcelona, securing his position at the club until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season. Given his illustrious history at Camp Nou as a player, it was widely anticipated that the former midfielder would eventually step into a managerial role at the Catalan giants.
Surprisingly, this opportunity materialized earlier than anticipated. Xavi spent two and a half years with the Qatari side Al Sadd before taking the reins at the La Liga club. Since then, the 43-year-old has played a pivotal role in leading Barcelona back to the summit of Spanish football, particularly during a period marked by ongoing financial challenges.
In addition to claiming the Supercopa de Espana, Barcelona secured the La Liga title last season, doing so with a commanding 10-point lead and a mere 20 goals conceded throughout the campaign.
Now, Xavi and his squad are setting their sights on making a significant impact in the Champions League, following their premature exit in the 2022-23 season. Club officials are keen on establishing further stability ahead of this endeavor.
As reported by Marca, Xavi has reaffirmed his commitment to Barcelona, with his contract now set to run until the summer of 2026. This extension represents a two-year increase, as the iconic figure had less than 12 months remaining on his previous deal.
President Joan Laporta is said to have successfully negotiated terms with Xavi during their discussions, and an official announcement regarding the contract extension is expected in the near future.
Since taking charge in November 2021, Xavi has overseen a total of 94 matches across all competitions, securing 58 victories, 17 draws, and enduring 19 defeats. Three of these victories have come during the early stages of the 2023-24 campaign, with Barcelona triumphing over Cadiz, Villarreal, and Osasuna consecutively.
However, their failure to secure a win against Getafe on the opening day of the season has left Barcelona trailing leaders and arch-rivals Real Madrid by two points.
Barcelona’s next match will be against Real Betis, which they will host at their temporary home, Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, on September 16.
